Isolation Methods in Piping Systems to Meet Alberta's OH&S Code

Description

This two-day training program provides participants with a comprehensive overview of isolation techniques in piping systems, aimed at preventing major loss incidents within the energy sector, including Upgraders, SAGD, pipelines, and facilities. The course is structured in accordance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Code, Section 215.4.

The 2023 revision to the Alberta OH&S Code, effective March 31, 2023, introduced changes to Section 215.4, “Isolation Requirements for Piping or a Pipeline,” under Part 15, “Managing the Control of Hazardous Energy.” These modifications may influence facility operations and policies where isolation methods are employed.

The curriculum emphasizes the practical application of isolation systems, including:

• Review of Part 15, Section 215.4(1) techniques: Blinds or Blanks, Double-Block and Bleed (DBB), distinctions between DBB and Double Isolation and Bleed (DIB), as well as DIB-1 and DIB-2 methods.
• Orientation requirements and their implications under Section 215.4(1).
• Examination of alternate means of isolation, reverse orientations, single-point block valves, sealing performance (conventional vs. SPBV with compromised sealing), and innovative isolation methods summarized in Section 215.4(5).

This program supports professionals across specification, construction, and operations, fostering both technical competence and compliance with Alberta OH&S Code. The in-person delivery format promotes active engagement, encouraging participants to share practical experiences and contextualize the application of regulatory standards.
